ST EDMUNDS’S DAY CITIZEN OF THE YEAR AWARD 2010

TO BE COMPLETED BY NOMINATOR

Reason(s) for nomination for Daphne Dyer

This nomination represents a compilation of the thoughts of several members of the community who have been invited to contribute.

Mrs Daphne Dyer, a local, retired teacher is a well loved and respected member of the community. She works for the community in a variety of capacities. She is a School Governor, tutor for Bury Children’s Theatre, stalwart of the Irving Stage Company and member of the Friends of Kevalaer. These contributions are considerable.

In particular, however, Daphne Dyer has made a major contribution to the lives of many young people in Bury St Edmunds through her wonderful work in establishing with her Late husband Ray Dyer MBE, Suffolk Young Peoples Theatre which has now run for over 30 years. This is a free summer school that has given young people in the area aged between 14 and 21 the annual opportunity to produce a show of the highest standard in the theatre in just two weeks.

This is a selfless and tireless labour of love for Daphne throughout the year as she is the driving force behind the organisation and funding for the summer school. She was particularly courageous in being able to keep the summer school going when Ray died in 2007 and through her energy she has once again established a strong team to keep SYPT on a firm footing for many years to come. SYPT now has charitable status and a board of trustees.

Many young people have been inspired to develop successful careers in performing arts and alt have developed a life long love of the theatre through her work.

So many of the participating youngsters have explained that their confidence and self- esteem have been raised by the experience. One young person said that it had given her the confidence to go on to university because she felt more confident in herself and in her ability to make new friends.

In an era when there is so much negative press about young people Daphne has ensured that the public of Bury St Edmunds have seen at first hand the positive talents of the younger generation.

If selected this would be a well-deserved and popular award
